What Is Shopify Agentic Storefronts -- and How Do You Enable It?
Your products may already be live inside ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google AI Mode. Shopify enabled this for all eligible merchants on March 24, 2026 -- automatically, with no notification and no opt-in required.
If you're just hearing about this now, you're not alone. The rollout was quiet, opt-out by default, and covered 5.6 million Shopify stores simultaneously. This post explains what Shopify Agentic Storefronts actually is, how it works end to end, and the exact steps to check your status and enable it -- including the eligibility requirements that disqualify more stores than merchants expect.
What Is Agentic Commerce?
Agentic commerce is when an AI assistant acts as a buyer on behalf of a person, not just a search tool.
A traditional AI shopping experience looks like this: someone types "best running shoes under $120" into a search engine, gets a list of results, clicks through to a store, browses, and decides to buy.
An agentic experience is different. The person says "order me running shoes under $120, size 10, delivered by Friday" -- and the AI agent browses stores, compares products, selects the best match, and completes the checkout, without the buyer ever visiting a product page. The human approves the final action; the AI handles the navigation.
That shift -- from AI as research tool to AI as purchase agent -- is what makes this moment different from anything that came before it.
What Are Shopify Agentic Storefronts?
Shopify Agentic Storefronts is the infrastructure that connects your store's catalog to AI shopping platforms. It makes your products discoverable and purchasable by AI agents operating inside:
- ChatGPT (OpenAI)
- Microsoft Copilot
- Google AI Mode
- Gemini
When a user on any of these platforms asks an AI agent to help them buy something, eligible Shopify stores appear as potential sources. The agent evaluates product matches, and -- if all the right conditions are met -- can complete a purchase directly, redirecting the buyer to your Shopify checkout.
The key distinction from earlier AI shopping experiments: Shopify's Agentic Storefronts model sends buyers to your checkout, not to a checkout controlled by the AI platform. You keep your upsell flows. You get the customer's email. You own the post-purchase relationship. No additional transaction fee sits on top of your existing Shopify plan.
How the Purchase Flow Actually Works
Here is what happens from the moment a user makes a request to the moment a purchase completes in your Shopify admin.
Step 1 -- Intent parsing. The user tells an AI agent what they want to buy. The agent translates natural language into structured parameters: product type, price ceiling, specifications, delivery requirements.
Step 2 -- Catalog discovery. The agent queries Shopify's Catalog -- the syndication layer that aggregates products from all eligible Shopify stores. It filters against the user's requirements.
Step 3 -- Product evaluation. The agent ranks matching products based on structured data: product title, typed attributes (material, dimensions, compatibility), price, inventory status, shipping windows. It is not reading your product photography. It is not reading conversational marketing copy buried in JavaScript-rendered page sections. It is parsing structured fields.
Step 4 -- Checkout initiation. If a product clears the evaluation, the agent initiates a checkout session via Shopify's Agentic Storefront connection.
Step 5 -- Completion or escalation. If all required information is present (correct size, valid address, payment authorized), the checkout completes autonomously. If the agent is missing information, the buyer is asked to confirm or supply it before the transaction finalizes.
Step 6 -- Your Shopify admin. The order lands in your admin exactly like any other order -- same notification, same fulfillment flow, same post-purchase logic.
The total time from user request to completed checkout can be seconds. For your store, the result is an order with a customer record, fulfilled through your normal process.
Eligibility Requirements
Not every Shopify store qualifies. As of launch, the requirements are:
- US-based store selling to US customers -- international stores are not yet eligible
- Guest checkout enabled -- accounts-required checkout disqualifies a store outright
- Store policies published -- Terms of Service must be added in Shopify admin
- Supplemental Terms agreed -- a one-time agreement to Shopify's Agentic Storefronts terms
Of these, guest checkout is the most common blocker. Many merchants turned it off to drive account creation and email capture -- a reasonable tradeoff when human buyers are involved. With AI agents, there is no workaround. An agent cannot create a customer account. If your checkout requires one, your store is ineligible.
Store policies are the second most common gap. Stores that auto-generated placeholder policies during setup and never updated them may fail Shopify's validation here.
How to Enable Shopify Agentic Storefronts (Step by Step)
The setup lives entirely in Shopify admin. No app install required.
Step 1: Check your current status
Open Shopify admin and go to Settings > Sales channels. Scroll to find Agentic Storefronts.
If you see it listed and active, your store was enrolled automatically on March 24, 2026. You can verify the AI channels your products appear in from this screen.
If you don't see the Agentic Storefronts section, your store is currently ineligible. Work through the checklist below.
Step 2: Enable guest checkout
In admin, go to Settings > Checkout. Under "Customer accounts," select Accounts are optional or Accounts are disabled. Save.
Note: this change affects all customers, not just AI-agent buyers. If you were using required accounts for list-building purposes, consider an alternative capture mechanism (exit intent, post-purchase offers) before changing this.
Step 3: Add or verify store policies
Go to Settings > Policies. You need at minimum:
- Terms of Service
- Privacy Policy
- Refund Policy
If any of these are empty or using placeholder text that doesn't reflect your actual store, update them before proceeding. Shopify validates that policies exist and are substantive -- a blank template will not pass.
Step 4: Enable Shop Pay
Go to Settings > Payments > Shopify Payments. Enable Shop Pay if it isn't already on.
Shop Pay is the preferred payment method for autonomous AI-agent checkouts. Without it, some agent checkout flows cannot complete -- the transaction falls into an "escalation" state where the buyer must manually enter payment details. This doesn't make you ineligible, but it reduces the rate at which AI agents can complete purchases from your store without buyer intervention.
Step 5: Agree to Supplemental Terms
When you navigate to Settings > Sales channels > Agentic Storefronts, you'll be prompted to accept Shopify's Supplemental Terms. Read them, then agree to activate the feature.
Step 6: Confirm activation
After completing the above, return to Settings > Sales channels > Agentic Storefronts and confirm the toggle is active. Your products are now in the Shopify Catalog and discoverable by all four AI channels.
The entire process takes under five minutes if your policies and guest checkout settings are already in order.
After Enabling -- What to Expect
Activation is not the same as performance.
Once your store is in the Shopify Catalog, AI agents can find you. Whether they recommend you over a competitor depends entirely on your product data. This is not a matter of opinion -- Shopify's own research shows stores with 99%+ attribute completion see 3-4x higher AI visibility compared to stores with incomplete catalog data.
Consider what an AI agent is reading when it evaluates your products:
- A product titled "The Drift" tells an agent nothing about material, use, dimensions, or category.
- A product titled "Texturizing Sea Salt Hair Spray, 8oz -- Volumizing, Light Hold" gives the agent enough to match against a buyer's request in 200ms.
The same logic applies to descriptions, variant labels, and metafields. Marketing copy written for human appeal often fails agent evaluation.
A quick self-test: open ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask for something you sell, the way a real buyer would phrase it. Check whether your products appear, and note what data surfaced in the recommendation.
If your products are either missing from results or appearing without enough information for buyers to act on, that's a product data quality issue -- not a setup issue. Our Store Health Audit covers this directly: catalog quality, conversion flow, and technical SEO in a single prioritized report, delivered in 72 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions
If my store was eligible on March 24, is it already active?
Yes. Shopify enrolled all eligible stores automatically. Check Settings > Sales channels > Agentic Storefronts to confirm your status. If the toggle is on, your products are in the Shopify Catalog.
Do I need to be on a specific Shopify plan?
No minimum plan is specified in Shopify's current eligibility requirements. Basic Shopify and up are eligible, provided you meet the other criteria.
Does Shopify charge extra for orders through Agentic Storefronts?
No. Orders completed through Agentic Storefronts use your existing Shopify checkout. Your standard plan transaction rates apply. No extra fee is added.
What if I don't want my products in AI shopping channels?
Go to Settings > Sales channels > Agentic Storefronts and toggle it off. Your store's visibility in Google, social channels, and elsewhere is unaffected.
Does having good SEO help with AI discoverability?
Partially. Traditional SEO signals (meta titles, structured data, clean URL structure) overlap with what AI agents read. But agentic discovery depends more on product-level data quality -- typed metafields, accurate inventory, complete variant attributes -- than on page-level SEO. Good SEO is a foundation; agentic readiness is a layer on top of it.
Do stores outside the US qualify?
Not yet. Current eligibility requires a US-based store selling to US customers. Shopify is expected to expand this as the rollout progresses.
What to Do Today
- Open Settings > Sales channels > Agentic Storefronts and check your status
- If you're not active, run through the five steps above
- Once active, test it: ask ChatGPT for something you sell and check what comes back
- If your products aren't showing up -- or showing up with thin data -- the issue is your catalog, not your settings
Setup takes five minutes. Getting your catalog ready for agentic commerce takes more. If you want a systematic view of where your store stands, a Store Health Audit is the right starting point.
